Champions League: AEK Athens vs Ajax marred by horrific violence leaving fans bloodied

The Champions League clash between AEK Athens and Ajax has been marred by horrific violence in the stands.
Supporters were left bloodied after clashes between the two sets of fans in the Greek capital.
An explosion, caused by a suspected petrol bomb, also took place, reportedly thrown by home supporters into the away end.

Riot police were drafted in to stop Ajax fans from retaliating in ugly scenes before a ball had been kicked in the Group E Clash. But that led to cops battling with the Dutch supporters, with harrowing pictures showing multiple fans with blood on their faces in the violent clashes.

Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt rushed over to the travelling fans to plead for calm amid the shocking scenes. There were some suggestions a number of Panathinaikos fans, AEK's big rivals, were among the Ajax supporters.

One person in the ground tweeted: "Riots in Athens. AEK fans attack Ajax box with fireworks because there are fans of Panathinaikos between the Amsterdammers." On the pitch, Ajax took a 2-0 lead in the second half after AEK had been reduced to 10 men. Prior to kick-off, Ajax sat second in Group E, two points behind leaders Bayern Munich and four clear of third-placed Benicar. AEK are so far pointless from four fixtures ahead of this evening's clash.
